An important part of a race weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
is the operation of the Pace Car and Safety Vehicles. These
vehicles are used to pace the races to the green flag, as well as
to bring the race cars under control in the event of a
full-course yellow flag. They are also used for demonstration
laps for VIPs and special guests.
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the only race track to have its pace
car program involved in every major event each year and
throughout every aspect of the facility. Started in 2003 with the
support of Mazda, the program has an impeccable safety record of
more than 5,000 track laps without a single injury, accident or
failed car part.
The Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Pace and Safety Car program has has
hosted a number of illustrious guest drivers such as Mario
Andretti, Danny Sullivan and Nigel Olson, famed drummer for Elton
John. The team has also welcomed some famous guests in the
passenger seat including Brad Pitt, Patrick Dempsey, F1 Legend
Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby, famed Mazda RX-8 designer Ikuo Maeda
and Peter Birtwhistle Chief Designer of the Mazda MX-5, among
others.
